Founder of North Carolina High School Track & Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame

Brett Honeycutt has been involved in the sport for nearly 40 years in a variety of roles: as an athlete (college and high school), coach (public and private school), reporter (daily newspaper and online running sites), meet director (large invitationals and weekday meets), researcher (compiling all-time North Carolina track and cross country lists, state cross country and track championships, large invitationals, significant events in state history to the early 1900s, as well as other projects), and as a promoter of the sport in various ways, including holding various statewide offices and founding the North Carolina High School Track & Field and Cross Country Hall of Fame. 

COACHING:

(at Metrolina Christian, Indian Trail, 2009-present)

After taking over the boys and girls cross country teams at Metrolina Christian in the fall of 2009, and starting the track program in the spring of 2010, had almost immediate success by taking a program from last to first in three years, as well as having equal and immediate success in track.

He credits the support from school administration, athletic department, teachers, and a group of knowledgeable assistant coaches for the sustained success.

      Researched and compiled various lists for North Carolina high school cross country and track & field, including all-time lists for each track event, as well as for well-known North Carolina cross country courses (McAlpine Park, Hagan Stone Park), and conference cross country champions lists for Charlotte and Raleigh-area conferences.

      Researched NCHSAA and NCISAA cross country and track and field state meets and and NCCSA cross country state meet, Foot Locker South, as well as long-standing North Carolina high school meets (Queen City Relays, Duke Invitational, Duke-Durham Relays, Metrolina/Dick Williams Relays/Invitational, Civitan Relays, Times-News Invitational, WHKP Relays, WNC Carnival). Also, unearthed state champions from the North Carolina High School Athletic Conference (for African-American schools), and early 20th century track and cross country results in North Carolina, including the Winter Indoor Track Classic for high schools (1922-1986) and the first state cross country championships (1926-1934), and other projects.

      Graduated ranked all-time, top-5 in school history in 4 events:

      No. 5 in cross country (5K); No. 3 all-time, 400 meters, 800 meters and 1,600 meters.

      The cross country performance was still top-10 (No. 8) all-time, and the 400, 800 and 1,600-meter performances were still top-5 all-time as of winter of 2024.
