His impact on North Carolina was so great, that the NC General Assembly penned a joint resolution by the N.C. House and N.C. Senate, in 1973, when he was only a junior in high school, proclaiming him as “one of the outstanding native sons” of the state, and also the town of Tarboro declared Aug. 1, 1973, “Carter Suggs Day”.
At East Carolina, he was MVP of the indoor & outdoor Southern Conference Championship meets in 1975, while winning 5 Southern Conference titles at the 1975 outdoor meet, and helped the Pirates to 3 conference titles.
